Toward Sensitive Robotics: Amazon Unveils Vulcan and Its Intelligent Touch

What if the future of Artificial Intelligence were no longer measured solely by its computational power, but also by its tactile sensitivity? By unveiling Vulcan, a robot equipped with a true sense of touch, Amazon is ushering robotics into a new era, where machines no longer merely see or execute commands, but can now feel. Behind this project lies a whole new vision of human-machine interaction, based on robots’ ability to understand their physical environment with subtlety. Vulcan is not just a technological feat; it is also a symbol of a paradigm shift—one in which AI takes on a physical form and becomes more human in its movements.

Developed by Amazon Robotics, Vulcan relies on a multimodal haptic system that combines capacitive sensors, three-dimensional pressure sensors, and vibrotactile actuators. This configuration allows the robot to perceive texture, the force of contact, and even micro-variations in the pressure exerted on an object. The system is driven by deep learning algorithms capable of contextualizing sensory signals and adapting the robot’s behavior in real time.

In practice, this means that Vulcan can grasp a fragile object without breaking it, recognize a slippery surface, or adjust its movements in response to unexpected tactile feedback. These capabilities significantly improve the robot’s safety and adaptability in complex and changing environments1.

With Vulcan, Amazon is demonstrating its commitment to pushing robotics beyond mechanical performance toward adaptive physical intelligence. This shift toward tactile intelligence opens up a vast range of applications: logistics, healthcare, social robotics, and even domestic interaction. But it also raises new questions: What ethical boundaries should apply to robots that “feel”? How should their behavior be regulated in social settings?

As AI increasingly permeates our daily lives, Vulcan could well be the forerunner of a generation of machines capable not only of calculating or predicting, but of understanding and adapting to the world through touch.
