An intelligent robot on your desk? Hugging Face unveils Reachy Mini

In 2025, Hugging Face unveiled Reachy Mini, a compact, modular, open-source desktop robot designed to make artificial intelligence tangible and interactive1. This robot aims to democratize AI robotics by making it accessible to researchers, teachers, students, and tech enthusiasts.

Reachy Mini represents a new generation of hybrid devices: it serves as an assistant, an experimentation platform, and an educational tool. It embodies Hugging Face’s ambition: to bridge the gap between open-source language models and physical robotics. The challenge is no longer solely software-based, but structural: how can we integrate cognitive AI with forms of interaction embodied in the real world?

Despite its compact design, the Reachy Mini features advanced components:

  • an articulated arm for performing simple movements and pointing at objects,
  • a display panel for showing animated synthetic expressions,
  • an onboard camera and proximity sensors to interact with its surroundings,
  • a microphone and speakers for two-way voice communication.

The robot can respond to voice commands, track faces, perform precise movements, and display emotions through facial animations. It can be controlled locally or via API and is fully customizable. Its compact design allows it to be used on a desk without complex setup, making it an ideal portable and modular tool for a variety of environments.

Reachy Mini leverages open-source Transformers models for natural language processing, speech recognition, and response generation2. It can be paired with LLMs such as Mistral, Falcon, or cloud-independent variants.

Depending on the use case, it can:

  • understand voice commands in natural language,
  • generate context-appropriate conversational responses,
  • display expressive reactions (nodding, smiling, blinking),
  • adapt one's behavior to the person one is speaking with, by adjusting one's voice, speaking pace, or demeanor.

It allows users to integrate their own AI models (LLMs or specialized assistants) while retaining control over execution parameters. This granular control is essential for academic projects, sensitive applications, or advanced prototyping environments.

With Reachy Mini, Hugging Face is bringing a bold vision to life : embodying open-source AI in a physical device. The company aims to:

  • demonstrate that AI is not limited to the cloud or text-based interfaces,
  • offer an open alternative to hardware-based assistants controlled by GAFAM,
  • to promote the development of smart embedded applications in real-world environments,
  • promote the technical adoption of AI among non-expert audiences, particularly through open hardware.

Reachy Mini thus serves as an interface between the digital world and the physical world, and is part of a vision of AI that is more distributed, autonomous, and collaborative3.

The robot was designed for use in a variety of settings, each with its own specific applications:

  • Education: AI awareness, coding education, inclusive robotics, cognitive science research.
  • Research: human-computer interface prototyping, embodied cognition simulation, exploration of multimodal interactions.
  • Company: intelligent receptionist, service demonstrator, embedded conversational support, ongoing training.
  • Accessibility: a customizable assistant for people with visual impairments, or as a communication aid.

Its ease of setup makes it an ideal tool for testing artificial intelligence in real-world situations, interacting with humans in a variety of contexts.

Reachy Mini also raises some key questions:

  • How transparent are we about the models used and their limitations?
  • How should we handle the voice and behavioral data we collect?
  • What impact might an AI that simulates emotions or expresses opinions have?
  • Will the cost of the technology remain affordable enough to allow for true widespread adoption?

Simulated emotion, in particular, raises the question of how to distinguish between genuine emotional engagement and mechanical reactions. Hugging Face provides an open and well-documented framework, but the final application will depend on the implementation parameters chosen by the users themselves4.

Reachy Mini illustrates a fundamental trend: the dematerialization of software is no longer enough to create a tangible AI experience. By making it visible, tangible, and manipulable, Hugging Face gives the intelligent agent a physical form once again.

The goal is not to humanize AI, but to make it accessible, explainable, and contextualized within human interaction. This project could pave the way for unobtrusive, ethical, and adaptable personal robotics powered by open-source AI models. A step toward AI that is accessible and on a human scale.
