OpenAI announced on Tuesday the launch of its app Sora on Android, following an initial launch on iOS in late September. The app, which uses artificial intelligence to generate videos from text prompts, is now available on Alphabet’s Google Play Store in the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The European rollout is currently in the works, according to Bill Peebles, project lead at OpenAI1.
Sora on Android: A Global Expansion Strategy
Following a meteoric launch on iOS, where the app surpassed one million downloads in just five days, Sora is coming to Android with the goal of expanding its user base into new markets in Asia and North America.
It quickly established itself in the Apple ecosystem: the most downloaded app for nearly three weeks, and still ranked 5th among the most popular free apps on iPhone2.
The move to Android is part of a global growth strategy. According to StatCounter, Android accounts for 71.6% of the global mobile market, giving OpenAI access to hundreds of millions of additional users3. This expansion reflects the company’s desire to diversify its mobile offerings following the continued success of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s first mobile app.
An experience inspired by TikTok and designed to foster creativity
Sora stands out for its short-form video feed, which is directly inspired by TikTok but focused on AI-generated audiovisual content. Users can describe a scene—such as “a sunset filmed from a space station”—and receive a complete video in just a few seconds, complete with a soundtrack and built-in effects.
“The idea isn’t to replace human creativity, but to expand it,” says Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI4. “We want to make visual creation accessible to everyone, regardless of technical expertise.”
The app also features a collaborative social feed, allowing users to share, comment on, or remix content created by other members. This model fosters a community-driven approach to video creation, building on the participatory model already popularized by social media.
Impressive figures and rapid adoption
Sora’s initial success confirms the growing interest in video-generation tools. According to data from Sensor Tower, the app reached 1.2 million downloads on iOS in less than a week and now has over 3.5 million cumulative installations across both platforms2. During its first ten days of operation, users produced more than 400,000 videos, nearly 40% of which were for educational or professional purposes.
According to OpenAI, users aged 18 to 34 account for 60% of all downloads, a figure that confirms the appeal of generative video among young creators. More than 70% of the videos created are shared on social media, particularly on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts.
Ethical Issues and Regulation of User-Generated Content
In response to the explosion of AI-generated content, OpenAI is strengthening its transparency measures. Every video produced via Sora now includes a digital watermark that complies with the standards of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), making it possible to verify the media’s provenance5. This measure aims to limit the risks of misinformation and malicious use, an issue that is already central to international discussions on the regulation of generative AI.
In addition, the rollout of Sora is accompanied by partnerships with several regulatory bodies, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States and the European Commission, to ensure compliance with the new requirements of the Digital Services Act.
Toward a New Era of Mobile Generative Video
With Sora, OpenAI is taking another step forward in its strategy to integrate multimodal technologies. The app builds on its other products (ChatGPT, DALL·E, and Whisper) and demonstrates the convergence of creation, automation, and accessibility.
AI-generated video is thus moving beyond the experimental stage to become a creative tool for the general public, available on smartphones. But this widespread adoption comes with significant challenges: energy management, legal frameworks, and the fight against visual excesses.
