Anthropic turns the mirror around: Reflect reveals how you use Claude

Artificial intelligence has become a fixture in the daily lives of millions of users. Writing an email, preparing a presentation, summarizing a document, or coming up with an idea has become second nature for many. But at what point does a simple tool become a true habit? With Reflect, Anthropic offers a unique approach. Rather than adding a new feature to Claude, the company is launching a dashboard capable of analyzing how each person uses their assistant to help users better understand their relationship with artificial intelligence.1

Unlike most digital platforms, which seek to maximize the time users spend on their services, Anthropic says it wants to encourage a more mindful use of AI. This initiative sparks a new debate: After striving to make assistants ever more powerful, should companies now help their users better control their own usage?

Reflect serves as a review of the work done with Claude. The tool analyzes conversation history and generates a set of metrics that allow you to visualize changes in usage over different time periods, ranging from one month to a full year.1

Users can thus identify the times when they most frequently use Claude, view the number of conversations they’ve had, or see the types of tasks most often assigned to the assistant. Whether it’s writing, brainstorming, programming, personal organization, or research: Reflect gradually highlights the areas where artificial intelligence plays the biggest role.

The goal is not to measure Claude's performance, but rather to show how it fits into each user's work and thought processes.

One of Reflect’s unique features is its approach. While many digital services use dashboards to encourage ever-greater engagement, Anthropic takes an almost opposite approach.

Beyond the charts and statistics, Reflect directly poses several questions designed to encourage personal reflection. In particular, users are asked to identify the tasks they prefer to continue doing themselves, even if Claude could complete them more quickly. This approach aims to encourage a more balanced use of artificial intelligence rather than systematic delegation.

Anthropic thus acknowledges that a high-performing AI assistant does not necessarily need to be used for all daily activities. Certain tasks retain a value in terms of learning, creativity, or reflection that fully justifies performing them without assistance.

Reflect does more than just monitor usage habits. The tool also lets you set reminders to encourage users to take a break when they spend a lot of time with Claude.

This makes it possible to set time slots without having to ask the assistant, or to receive notifications simply reminding you to take a break. This feature is similar to mechanisms already found on some smartphones that allow users to track their screen time, but here it is applied directly to the use of artificial intelligence.

This approach is relatively unusual in the world of digital technology, where new services generally seek to increase the amount of time users spend on them rather than limit it.

Reflect is currently available in beta to Claude Free, Pro, and Max users who have enabled usage analytics.2

To access the dashboard, simply go to Claude’s settings—either in the web app or the desktop version—and enable the corresponding option. Once this feature is enabled, Reflect will gradually generate a personalized report based on the available usage history.

If no report appears immediately, Anthropic notes that this usually means that not enough usage data has been collected yet or that activity analysis has not yet been enabled on the account. The company also plans to expand Reflect to Cowork conversations in the near future, in order to provide a more comprehensive view of how Claude is used for collaboration.

The feature is being rolled out gradually in countries where Claude is already available, including in Europe, at no additional cost to users eligible for the beta phase.

The launch of Reflect marks an interesting development in the artificial intelligence industry. Until now, competition among major research labs has focused primarily on model performance, context size, and reasoning capabilities.

Anthropic introduces another dimension here: that of digital well-being. The company believes that the quality of an assistant depends not only on what it is capable of producing, but also on how it supports its users over time.

This line of thinking echoes concerns that are becoming increasingly prevalent in businesses, educational institutions, and government agencies, where the rapid adoption of AI assistants is raising questions about the preservation of human skills, cognitive load, and growing dependence on digital tools.

Reflect also sparks a broader discussion about the role that AI assistants now play in our daily lives. As these tools become more capable, the temptation to delegate an increasing number of tasks to them grows.

This trend offers clear benefits in terms of productivity, but it also raises questions about users’ ability to maintain certain essential skills, whether in writing, critical thinking, organization, or creativity.

By encouraging everyone to think about the tasks they want to continue doing on their own, Anthropic is taking an approach that is relatively rare in the industry. The company implicitly acknowledges that the value of artificial intelligence lies not only in its ability to replace certain activities, but also in its ability to support users without diminishing their autonomy.

With Reflect, Anthropic isn’t just launching a new statistical tool. The company is offering a new way to interact with artificial intelligence, where transparency about how the model is used becomes just as important as the model’s performance itself.

As chatbots become more integrated into both professional and personal settings, this type of feature could gradually become the norm. Understanding how we use artificial intelligence may soon be just as important as the answers it provides.

Technology Framework

How does Reflect work?

Reflect is a new feature developed by Anthropic to help Claude users make more mindful use of artificial intelligence. Unlike traditional dashboards, which are limited to displaying activity statistics, Reflect analyzes Claude usage patterns to help each user understand the role the assistant plays in their daily life. The goal is not to evaluate the AI’s performance, but to provide a comprehensive view of how it is used, with a focus on transparency and digital well-being.

The system draws on the user’s conversation history to identify various usage patterns. Reflect groups conversations by time period, highlights the times when Claude is most frequently used, and categorizes conversations based on their primary purposes: writing, programming, brainstorming, personal organization, learning, or information gathering. These analyses provide a clearer picture of the habits that gradually develop over the course of weeks or months.

Beyond the statistics, Reflect introduces a reflective dimension. The feature regularly prompts users to consider how they use Claude, particularly by identifying the tasks they prefer to continue doing themselves and those they now delegate to artificial intelligence. This approach aims to encourage a balanced use of AI rather than the systematic automation of intellectual activities.

Reflect also allows users to set up personalized reminders to encourage them to take a break or limit certain periods of use. This approach is inspired by screen time tracking tools found on smartphones, but applied this time to conversational AI. Anthropic is thus seeking to promote responsible use of Claude rather than maximize the time spent on its platform.

Key Features of Reflect
  • Custom Dashboard: View activity on Claude over different time periods (month, quarter, or year)
  • Analysis of Work Patterns: Identifying the Main Types of Tasks Assigned to Artificial Intelligence
  • Usage Statistics: Tracking the Number of Conversations, Activity Periods, and How They Have Changed
  • Guided Reflection: Questions Designed to Encourage a More Mindful Use of AI
  • Personalized reminders: the ability to set up notifications prompting users to take a break or limit usage during certain times
  • Native integration with Claude: works directly from the assistant's settings, without any additional installation
  • Rollout in phases: available in beta for Free, Pro, and Max users who have enabled activity tracking
Technical constraints and limitations
  • Reflect is currently available in beta, and some features are still being rolled out
  • The analysis depends on the available historical data, so new users have little data to start with
  • Cowork conversations are not yet fully supported, but Anthropic has announced their integration
  • The analyses are based solely on interactions with Claude and do not reflect the user’s full range of digital activities.
  • Statistics serve as a tool to aid in reflection and do not allow for the assessment of a potential psychological dependence on AI
  • Users retain the option to disable the collection of data necessary for Reflect to function
