Meta and Midjourney: A Strategic Partnership to Revolutionize AI-Powered Images and Video

Generative artificial intelligence has profoundly changed the way visual content is created, distributed, and perceived. Since 2022, tools such as DALL·E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion have made it widely accessible to generate images from simple text descriptions. At the same time, social platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts have reinforced the importance of short, expressive, and immersive visual formats.

In this context, the partnership announced in the summer of 2025 between Meta (the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads) and Midjourney marks a strategic turning point. It is no longer simply a matter of generating individual images, but of building a comprehensive multimodal infrastructure capable of transforming a text query into an image, video, or animation for billions of users.

In July 2025, Meta formalized a strategic partnership with Midjourney, which had previously been an independent company focused on Discord. The agreement provides for:

  • the gradual integration of Midjourney into Meta’s content creation interfaces, including Instagram (Stories and Reels), Facebook, WhatsApp (AI stickers), and the immersive experiences in Horizon Worlds;
  • Midjourney API access to Meta's internal AI services (Emu, Make-A-Video, Audiobox) to unify generative workflows;
  • a hybrid collaboration model, in which Midjourney retains its editorial independence while leveraging Meta’s cloud infrastructure, distribution model, and social network.

This initiative aims to make visual AI accessible to the general public, without the need for specialized tools or complex interfaces.

Since 2023, Meta has gradually developed a series of generative visual AI models:

  • Emu for generating images from text or sketches;
  • Make-A-Video for short video creation;
  • Audiobox for generating voices and sound effects from a text prompt.

With the integration of Midjourney, users can now combine these modules to create a seamless multimodal experience: a user can describe a scene, choose a visual style, add a sound or atmosphere, and then post the entire creation instantly to Reels or as a story.

For example:

“A futuristic café in Tokyo, rain outside, lo-fi soundtrack”
will generate a stylized short video with an integrated audio track in just a few seconds, right within Instagram.

This convergence of visual generation and social distribution heralds a new era in creative AI.

This alliance has many implications:

  • For content creators: the ability to produce original videos and visuals—without any design or editing skills—with a high degree of customization.
  • For brands: an opportunity to create dynamic advertising campaigns, where each ad is generated based on the user’s profile, context, or history.
  • For users: the promise of more engaging, visually rich, and personalized content—but at the risk of algorithmic isolation.

According to internal estimates released by Meta, more than 70% of Reels could include an AI-generated component by the end of 20261.

This new situation also raises complex questions:

  • Intellectual property: Who owns an image generated by Midjourney that is included in a sponsored ad? The user? Meta? Midjourney?
  • Risks of misuse: deepfakes, manipulative content, and the misuse of generated images.
  • Reporting AI-generated content: Meta will be required to comply with the European AI Act and flag AI-generated content (watermarking, provenance tags).
  • Artists' rights: There are tensions surrounding the datasets used to train visual models, particularly in the arts.

Discussions about responsible AI will need to intensify as these tools become more widespread in public and social settings.

By partnering with Midjourney, Meta isn’t just integrating an image-generation AI. It’s building an integrated ecosystem where content creation, customization, distribution, and monetization are all driven by AI.

This convergence raises hopes for the democratization of visual creation, new forms of expression, and increased productivity for creators. But it also calls for collective vigilance regarding the uses, biases, and social impacts of this technology.

This partnership may well herald the future of consumer AI, where anyone can potentially create complex visual worlds without writing a single line of code or using editing software.
