Anthropic is shaking up the world of coding with Cowork, an AI agent that takes control of your PC

Generative artificial intelligence is taking a new step forward with the arrival of agents capable not only of conversing but also of directly interacting with users’ digital environments. With Claude Cowork, Anthropic offers a consumer-friendly version of its code agents, designed to integrate into everyday use without requiring advanced technical skills. This development illustrates a fundamental trend: the gradual shift from conversational AI to operational AI, capable of performing complex tasks in a semi-autonomous manner.

Until recently, large language models were primarily limited to text generation, analysis, or advisory functions. Claude Cowork takes a different approach. Integrated directly into Claude Desktop, the agent enables the AI to interact with the user’s local files, provided the user explicitly designates a folder as a workspace. This folder then becomes a controlled environment in which the AI can read, analyze, create, or modify documents in response to instructions given in natural language.

This approach marks a significant shift in the relationship between the user and AI. The conversation is no longer limited to abstract assistance or suggestions, but leads to concrete actions carried out directly on the workstation. The agent can thus perform a series of operations, such as analyzing a set of files, extracting relevant information from them, and then generating a summary or updating existing documents.

Anthropic presents Cowork as a consumer-friendly version of Claude Code, its agent originally designed for developers. Whereas Claude Code assumes familiarity with technical environments and command-line interfaces, Cowork relies exclusively on a conversational interface. No additional software is required, and no command lines are needed. Users interact with Claude as they normally would, but the AI is now able to act on local resources within a strictly defined scope.

This design choice is intended to significantly lower the barrier to entry for autonomous agents. According to Anthropic, the goal is to make these technologies accessible to non-technical users, while maintaining a controlled operating environment1. The agent has no global access to the system or to other files or applications, unless explicitly authorized. This deliberate restriction is a central element of Cowork’s positioning.

One of the main challenges associated with agents capable of interacting with a computer lies in the issue of control. By confining Cowork to a specific folder, Anthropic introduces a form of software sandbox, which limits the risks of errors, accidental deletion, or unauthorized access to sensitive data. This architecture reflects a cautious approach to agency, in which the AI’s autonomy is constrained by clear technical boundaries.

This compromise addresses a growing concern among users and regulators. According to a Gartner study published in 2024, more than 60% of companies identify the lack of control over automated AI actions as a major barrier to their widespread adoption2. By offering a powerful yet confined agent, Anthropic seeks to balance operational efficiency with trust requirements.

While Cowork is designed for the general public, its potential uses extend far beyond personal use. The agent can be used to organize files, analyze documents, automate repetitive tasks, or assist in the creation of structured content. In a professional setting, these capabilities pave the way for new ways of working, where AI becomes a true digital collaborator, capable of handling entire sequences of tasks under human supervision.

This development is part of a broader trend observed among several players in the sector. OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are also entering the field of agents capable of operating within full-fledged software environments, whether browsers, office suites, or operating systems3. Cowork thus illustrates a gradual convergence between intelligent assistants and advanced productivity tools.

Despite its technical safeguards, the introduction of agents capable of modifying local files raises ethical and legal questions. Liability in the event of an error, the traceability of actions performed by AI, and the protection of personal data remain key concerns. Even when confined to a single folder, AI can manipulate sensitive information, which requires increased vigilance on the part of users.

That said, Cowork’s relative autonomy should not obscure its limitations. The agent operates based on instructions provided by the user and remains dependent on the quality of the data and instructions received. Like any language model, it can produce erroneous interpretations or inappropriate actions, which requires systematic human oversight. Anthropic also emphasizes the central role of the user in validating the actions undertaken by the agent1.

With Claude Cowork, Anthropic offers a progressive and controlled approach to agent-based AI. Rather than aiming for complete autonomy, the company favors a gradual integration process based on restricted environments and explicit permissions. This strategy could facilitate the social and professional acceptance of intelligent agents by alleviating fears related to a loss of control.

As these tools become more widespread, one question remains: to what extent will we be willing to delegate our digital activities to artificial intelligence, even when it is supervised? Cowork offers an initial pragmatic answer, but above all, it opens up a broader debate on the role of autonomous agents in our daily and professional lives.
