Magistral: Mistral’s Artificial Intelligence that brings new meaning to automated reasoning

Can artificial intelligence be equipped with true reasoning capabilities comparable to those of a human being? Mistral AI addresses this ambitious question with Magistral, its brand-new model, which is billed as the first European model specifically trained for structured reasoning and logical analysis.

In an ecosystem still dominated by generative models focused on text prediction (LLMs), Magistral aims to reintroduce argumentative, logical, and symbolic capabilities into artificial intelligence, while preserving the power of large deep learning-based models.

Mistral AI, a French startup now established as a major player in open-source AI in Europe, is pursuing a distinctive strategy: following its Mistral 7B and Mixtral models, it is unveiling Magistral, a model designed to solve complex problems, justify its answers, and structure its reasoning.

According to the initial public demonstrations and benchmarks released by the company:

  • Magistral outperforms GPT-3.5 on standard logical tasks (decision trees, deductive reasoning, symbolic inference)1.
  • It is capable of solving multi-step practical problems (such as those found on the GRE, LSAT, or legal reasoning tests) with a success rate exceeding 78%, according to initial internal tests2.
  • The model can provide a detailed explanation of its answer, outlining each step of its reasoning.

This approach is part of a growing trend toward creating so-called " reasoning-native " models, which are closer to formal logic and human cognitive processes. OpenAI with GPT-4, Anthropic with Claude 3 Opus, and now Mistral with Magistral are all seeking to go beyond statistical text generation.

This paradigm shift has significant practical implications, particularly in sectors where the quality of reasoning, rigorous argumentation, and transparency are essential:

  • Legal assistance: understanding a case, applying legal precedent, comparing cases, and justifying an interpretation.
  • Audit and Finance: Analysis of a logical sequence of accounting discrepancies or risk scenarios.
  • Medicine: comparing diagnostic hypotheses, explaining treatment decisions.
  • Education: training in scientific, mathematical, or critical thinking.

One of the first tests conducted by PSL University in partnership with Mistral involved having Magistral solve Sciences Po admission exams or structured essays: the results are considered promising, even if the reasoning is still sometimes biased or superficial.

While most LLMs struggle to explain how they arrive at a given conclusion, Magistral is designed to make its “thought process” visible, using a logic similar to the concept of Chain of Thought Prompting.

This approach aligns with the goals of the movement for more interpretable AI that adheres to high ethical standards, as championed in particular by the European Commission through the AI Act.

By enabling AI to explain its answers and structure its reasoning, Mistral helps build user trust—particularly in sensitive fields (law, finance, healthcare) where decisions made by a machine must be auditable.

Finally, this launch is part of a broader push toward European technological sovereignty. While most high-level models are American, Magistral demonstrates the ability of French companies to innovate in the field of automated reasoning—an area long considered secondary to the generation of dynamic content.

Mistral’s rapid growth—backed by more than 500 million euros in public and private funding—is accompanied by a commitment to keeping the code, training data, and datasets largely transparent, in the spirit of open source.
