Self-service artificial intelligence: OVHcloud unveils AI Endpoints, a serverless, open-source solution

On April 29, 2025, OVHcloud launched AI Endpoints, an innovative platform designed to facilitate access to open-source artificial intelligence in a serverless environment. This initiative is part of a European effort to make AI technologies more widely available while strengthening digital sovereignty. By making pre-trained models available via on-demand APIs, OVHcloud aims to offer a credible alternative to major U.S. platforms such as Amazon SageMaker and Google Vertex AI.

This launch raises a key question: Can European cloud infrastructures provide a competitive and ethical framework for the deployment of generative AI and large-scale language models?

A strategic turning point for open-source AI in Europe

AI Endpoints is a natural extension of OVHcloud’s commitment to technological transparency and model portability. Unlike proprietary platforms, this solution is based on an open approach, leveraging foundational models such as LLaMA 2, Mistral, Mixtral, and Falcon1. Accessible via a REST API, the platform enables developers, researchers, and businesses to test and deploy AI use cases without worrying about managing the underlying infrastructure.

OVHcloud is specifically targeting European companies seeking to remain compliant with the European Union’s upcoming AI Act by ensuring traceability, data localization, and cost control. The serverless approach also helps lower barriers to experimentation while improving energy efficiency. According to OVHcloud, this architecture could reduce the average carbon footprint of an AI deployment by 30% compared to traditional offerings.

Ready-to-use features for a variety of applications

Among the features offered by AI Endpoints are:

  • Text generation from complex instructions (NLP),
  • Image generation from prompts (diffusion),
  • Sentiment analysis,
  • Automatic document classification,
  • Code generation.

The whole system is built on the principle of ease of use: a standard API, billed on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no prior configuration required. This approach meets the needs of small organizations and agile R&D teams, which are often held back by the complexity of traditional AI deployments.

In just a few months, the beta version reportedly generated more than 12 million queries, with a monthly growth rate of 40%, reflecting rapid adoption in both industry and academia.

Toward Standardizing the Use of AI in the European Cloud

The launch of this platform comes at a time when Europe is seeking to develop its own technology ecosystems while strengthening open-source initiatives. AI Endpoints could become a strategic cornerstone of this effort by providing a shared framework for testing, evaluating, and implementing AI solutions in regulated sectors such as healthcare, finance, education, and public services.

According to OVHcloud, more than 150 pilot companies have already tested the solution since its beta phase, covering use cases as varied as opinion analysis for polling firms, avatar generation in video games, and document management support in law firms2.

Digital Sovereignty and Technological Trust

By prioritizing European hosting, open-source compatibility, and transparent pricing models, OVHcloud aims to meet the growing demands for digital trust. This approach is also consistent with the recommendations of the “Cloud de Confiance” initiative led by the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI).

It could also address the fragmentation of the AI model market, where infrastructure choices determine not only performance but also safeguards regarding data protection, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance.

What role do European platforms play in the face of GAFAM?

With AI Endpoints, OVHcloud does not aim to compete directly with the cloud giants, but offers a functional and ethical alternative tailored to the constraints of the European market. The future of this platform will depend on its ability to build an ecosystem of partners (software vendors, startups, public institutions) and to regularly expand its catalog of models.

There is also an economic stake at play: according to IDC, global spending on AI-related cloud services is expected to exceed $110 billion by 20273, with an average annual growth rate of 18%. For Europe, mastering these infrastructures is becoming a strategic priority.

Turnkey AI as a driver of competitiveness and resilience

The availability of a turnkey AI solution—hosted locally and compatible with open-source standards—marks a significant step forward in making responsible artificial intelligence more accessible. It helps lower barriers to entry while strengthening requirements regarding ethics, transparency, and performance.

But to capitalize on this momentum, Europe will need to better coordinate its industrial, regulatory, and educational efforts, while supporting the emergence of true champions of open AI. The question remains: will the European cloud be able to establish a sustainable alternative model to the dominant infrastructures?
