Traditional building materials (asphalt, concrete, glass) store heat and contribute to raising ambient temperatures by several degrees.<sup><a href=\"#ref1\">1</a></sup>. Air conditioning, in turn, increases energy demand and exacerbates greenhouse gas emissions.  </p>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Against this backdrop, “thermoregulating” materials are emerging as a promising structural solution. Their rapid development today relies on an unexpected driver: artificial intelligence. </p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8cd81ae04cafd16b22116c972b165648\" style=\"color:#986e13\">Intelligent materials for passive architecture</h2>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Thermoregulating materials are designed to reduce heat transfer between the exterior and interior of a building without consuming electricity. They are sometimes inspired by the natural properties of certain living organisms (bio-inspired design) or make use of complex physical phenomena (spectral reflectance, thermal emissivity). </p>\n\n<p>Recent innovations include:</p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>paints that reflect up to 98% of the sun’s rays,</li>\n\n\n\n<li>adaptive coatings capable of changing their properties in response to temperature,</li>\n\n\n\n<li>nanocomposite structures that modulate heat conduction.</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">These materials are being tested on roofs, walls, and even roads. They are expected to reduce indoor temperatures by up to 5°C, which will have a significant impact on comfort and energy consumption. </p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1992a786991c55f124090572cb079a57\" style=\"color:#986e13\">The strategic role of artificial intelligence in their design</h2>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">The development of these complex materials is greatly accelerated by artificial intelligence.<sup><a href=\"#ref2\">2</a></sup>. Researchers are using machine learning to: </p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>predict the thermal properties</strong> of new material combinations,</li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>optimize</strong> nano- and micro-scale <strong>structures</strong>,</li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>model thermal behavior</strong> across several seasons or climatic zones,</li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>reduce prototyping time</strong>, thanks to inverse simulation and generative algorithms.</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Databases containing thousands of configurations are analyzed by the AI, which identifies those that offer the best balance between solar reflection, durability, and architectural integration.</p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c0fb9b7c3080d8b8361b803f94767b7c\" style=\"color:#986e13\">Impact on the city and the construction industry</h2>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">The adoption of these materials could significantly lower urban temperatures, mitigating heat waves and reducing the need for air conditioning.
