Mistral Large 4, nicknamed \u201cLe Chonk,\u201d is the largest model announced by Mistral AI. Its documentation describes a granular Mixture-of-Experts architecture comprising a total of 1.05 trillion parameters, 52 billion of which are activated for processing each token, and a visual encoder with 1.6 billion parameters. The public preview is available in Mistral Studio and via API. It supports structured outputs, function calls, document analysis, as well as agent-based tools and conversations. The published public pricing is $1.36 per million input tokens, $0.14 for cached inputs, and $4.18 per output.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n

As of October 12, the weights are not yet available for download. Mistral has announced that they will be released on October 27, following an evaluation phase involving developers, cybersecurity experts, and public authorities. Scale is the first change. Using a MoE architecture avoids having to activate all 1.05 trillion parameters at each step. The model mobilizes a fraction of its experts depending on the content being processed, aiming to combine high overall capacity with an inference cost lower than that of a dense architecture of comparable size.<\/p>\n\n

Multimodality is built-in: the system can process text and images and then generate text output. Mistral places particular emphasis on visual grounding\u2014that is, the ability to link a response to specific regions of an image. This feature can be useful for documents, industry, satellite imagery, or interface analysis.[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n

This development is also strategic. Mistral claims to have trained the model from scratch on approximately 4,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in European data centers.
