The concept is not new. It builds on a hypothesis that has been debated since the early days of AI research: if a system becomes capable of improving the process that produces it, each new version could help create the next one.[1]

The latest development stems from the alignment between this hypothesis and practices that are now observable. Laboratories use agents to write programs, set up experiments, analyze results, and automate parts of the research process. At the same time, several teams are releasing systems capable of modifying their own agent architecture or exploration strategy, and then retaining the changes that yield the best results.

This development warrants a detailed analysis, as the same terminology encompasses very different situations. An assistant who helps a researcher debug code, an agent who improves its own software, and a system that trains a more powerful foundation model on its own do not share the same level of autonomy or the same risks.

   02

What Recursive Self-Improvement Really Means

An improvement cycle generally consists of four steps: proposing a change, implementing it, measuring its effect, and then accepting or rejecting the change. Recursion occurs when the improved system, in turn, becomes the tool used to bring about the next improvement.

This definition does not necessarily mean that the parameters of a large model are retrained. The modified component may be an agent’s code, its memory, its tools, its search policy, its instructions, or its evaluation environment. A system can therefore improve at a specific task without acquiring higher-level general intelligence.

It is also important to distinguish between autonomy in execution and autonomy in goal-setting. In most current experiments, humans choose the problem, provide the computational resources, define the tests, and decide on the deployment framework. The system explores solutions within this space, but does not independently determine what warrants improvement or what consequences are acceptable.

MSc Generative
and Agentic AI

Become an expert in generative and agentic AI: LLMs, transformers, enterprise deployment. The system proposes modifications to its own code, evaluates the variants on AI research tasks, and retains the highest-performing ones. During an eight-day autonomous run, it produced seven successive improvements, particularly in the areas of search and memory management. The authors note that the gains carry over to four benchmarks that were not included in the selection process.[2]

Dream-RSI takes a different approach. The system improves its exploration strategy by reusing its search history in a simulator. The underlying code model remains unchanged; it is the orchestration layer that evolves. The results pertain to tasks in algorithmic engineering, mathematical optimization, and GPU kernel programming.[3]

Internal lab data also shows a rapid shift toward automation in research. Anthropic estimates that in August 2026, Claude was conducting, under human supervision, 26% of the AI research and development tasks measured by the company, while more than 90% reached at least some level of collaboration. Anthropic notes, however, that none of the measured categories were fully autonomous and that the methodology had not yet been subject to external verification.[4]

OpenAI describes a similar trend. The company claims to have reached the stage of a research assistant capable of performing, under human guidance, well-defined tasks representing a few days of skilled work. It also reports 3.1 agentic workdays for every human workday in its research organization as of mid-August 2026. These units measure the quantity of activity, not an equivalence in quality or scientific discovery.[5]

   04

What the results actually allow us to conclude

         Level observed

         What is demonstrated

         What is not demonstrated

         Research Support

Agents write code, run experiments, and analyze results.

         Complete automation of scientific research.

Agent Enhancement

AIDE² and Dream-RSI improve components or strategies within a defined framework.

A foundation model can retrain itself to a higher version.

         Consecutive Wins

Multiple cycles can lead to progress on specific assessments.

         Indefinite, general, or exponential improvement.

Transfer

Some gains persist in tasks not included in the selection.

A general ability to make progress in any new field.

Recent experiments therefore make narrow self-improvement more tangible. They show that an agent can help improve its own workflow when the objective, tests, and resources are provided. They do not validate the extreme scenario of an autonomous system capable of sustainably increasing its general capabilities without encountering any limits.

An economic analysis published in September 2026 reaches a cautious conclusion. The authors model the feedback loops linking automation of research, technical progress, and new capabilities. Their exploratory estimate suggests that these loops are strengthening, but that they are not yet powerful enough to sustain continuous acceleration on their own.[6]

   05

Why a continuous improvement cycle can end up slowing things down

The perception of automatic progress masks several bottlenecks. An improvement must first be properly measured. If the assessment is too narrow, the system may optimize the score rather than the desired capability. It may also exploit a flaw in the test, select a fragile modification, or impair a skill that is not being measured.

Computational resources pose another challenge. Proposing variants is relatively simple, but training and evaluating them can require increasing amounts of resources. High-quality data, infrastructure, energy, accelerator manufacturing, and human expertise do not automatically advance at the same pace as software.

Finally, the most important discoveries do not always result from local optimization. Choosing a new scientific direction, formulating a relevant hypothesis, or recognizing that a metric does not adequately measure the phenomenon under study still requires judgment. A highly effective loop can refine the wrong target.

   06

Why This Trend Matters to Organizations

In the short term, the most credible threat is not the sudden emergence of a superintelligence. It concerns the acceleration of research and development cycles. Teams can test more hypotheses, maintain complex software, and automate an increasing portion of experimentation.

This acceleration could reduce the cost of certain innovations, but it could also reinforce the advantage of players with the best models, the largest infrastructures, and the richest data. It also shifts the skills required: researchers and engineers must increasingly design evaluations, supervise agents, interpret results, and control termination conditions.

However, the reported productivity should be evaluated in terms of scientific output, not the volume of code or the number of experiments. An increase in activity may yield more useful ideas, but it may also result in more redundant results, errors that are difficult to detect, or work that is insufficiently documented.

   07

Challenges in Control, Security, and Governance

Self-improvement changes the nature of control. When each version contributes to the next, it becomes more difficult to determine which change introduced a particular behavior, whether the tests remain relevant, and whether the monitoring mechanisms are still appropriate. Activity logs, code traceability, independent reviews, and graded authorization then become central elements.

A specific risk arises if the system can modify its own evaluators or control mechanisms. Safety rules must be separated from the optimized component, protected against unauthorized modifications, and supplemented with a shutdown capability. OpenAI now classifies self-improvement as one of the capabilities monitored in its preparedness framework, due to the risk of rapid acceleration that is difficult to observe.[7]

In Europe, the AI Act does not create a specific legal category for recursive self-improvement. However, it imposes enhanced obligations on providers of general-purpose AI models that pose a systemic risk, including obligations related to assessment, risk mitigation, incident reporting, and cybersecurity. These obligations provide a relevant framework, though they do not, on their own, resolve the issue of a system that evolves faster than audit cycles.[8]

Governance will also need to avoid two pitfalls. The first would be to portray any form of automated optimization as an existential threat. The second would be to wait until full autonomy is achieved before establishing transparency. Useful metrics already include the proportion of automated search, the level of human oversight, access to resources, incidents, the robustness of evaluations, and the actual ability to stop a loop.

   08

What to Watch for Now

The next step involves more than just monitoring a single benchmark. It will be necessary to determine whether the gains persist on truly novel tasks, whether they improve multiple capabilities simultaneously, and whether they remain stable when evaluations are designed by third parties. The frequency of human intervention and computational costs must be published along with the results.

We will also need to observe the shift from optimizing a single agent to optimizing the entire model development cycle: data selection, architecture, training, evaluation, security, and deployment decisions. As long as these functions remain distributed among humans, specialized agents, and a controlled infrastructure, it is still an exaggeration to speak of a system that improves entirely on its own.

Recursive self-improvement is therefore both a real research program and a prospective scenario. The experiments of 2026 narrow the gap between the two, without eliminating it. The useful question is not to decide right now whether an intelligence explosion will occur, but to develop metrics, thresholds, and control mechanisms capable of remaining relevant if the automation of research continues to advance.

<section style="  width: 100%;
