He has no idea that he\u2019s wasting his time dealing with artificial intelligence designed to trap him.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">That is precisely the goal of <strong>Daisy (or dAIsy)<\/strong>, the new chatbot launched by <strong>O2<\/strong>, the British mobile phone operator. Designed to outsmart scammers trying to defraud vulnerable people, Daisy plays the role of a digital grandmother\u2014slow, endearing, but above all\u2026 extremely patient. Here\u2019s how it works.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">This type of initiative follows in the footsteps of projects like <strong>Jolly Roger Telephone Co.<\/strong> in the United States, which use voice bots that mimic \u201cgrandmothers\u201d to make life difficult for telephone scammers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">A creative response to a very real threat: According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), <strong>more than 2.5 million complaints about telephone scams<\/strong> were filed in the United States in 2024, resulting <strong>in more than $1.1 billion in losses<\/strong><sup><a href=\"#ref1\">1<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2\" style=\"color:#986e13\">How does this anti-AI work?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI uses a combination of accessible yet well-coordinated technologies:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a <strong>language model<\/strong> designed to understand scammers&#8217; speech and generate appropriate responses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>realistic speech synthesis<\/strong> that mimics the characteristics of an older person&#8217;s voice (intonation, hesitation, speech rate);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>automated detection of suspicious keywords<\/strong>, such as \u201cbank transfer,\u201d \u201cbanking issue,\u201d \u201cfamily emergency,\u201d etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">The bot simulates a real conversation while adopting a confused yet polite tone, which encourages scammers to continue the conversation.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/RV_SdCfZ-0s\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"text-justify wp-block-paragraph\">According to internal project data, Jolly Roger\u2019s AI systems divert <strong>calls<\/strong> for an average of <strong>15 to 25 minutes<\/strong> per call, with some <strong>calls<\/strong> lasting over <strong>40 minutes<\/strong><sup><a href=\"#ref2\">2<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3\" style=\"color:#986e13\">A form of defensive and creative AI<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This strategy falls under a new category of artificial intelligence: proactive defensive AI, which not only acts preemptively (through filtering) but also disrupts malicious activities.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than simply blocking calls, this AI uses the element of time to undermine the operational effectiveness of fraud networks.
